PERSBERICHT
The latest version of BREEAM-NL is now rewarding the use of Cradle to Cradle Certified Products. It is the first time in the Netherlands that Cradle to Cradle Certified Products are being considered in a national quality standard for buildings. In the United States, the US Green Building Council already decided to reward credits for the use of certified products in their building quality label LEEDv4. Rewarding the use of Cradle to Cradle Certified Products in leading quality standards for buildings is an important step in the recognition of circular construction materials as the way forward to a sustainable building sector.

The new version of BREEAM was launched by the Dutch Green Building Council on September 8th. It is the most commonly used sustainability standard for new buildings in the Netherlands. The latest version replaces the one from 2011 and has become more clear and user friendly, in addition to being updated with a number of new features.

BREEAM-NL 2014v1.0 rewards the use of Cradle to Cradle certified products in two different credits. For the credit ‘Construction Materials’, points can be earned with the significant reduction of the environmental impact of used construction materials. The credit ‘Responsible Sourcing’ awards points for the use of responsibly sourced construction materials.

The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute considers the development as an important acknowledgement of the value of the Cradle to Cradle Certification Scheme can add in the building sector. Roy Vercoulen, Vice President of the Institute: “The fact that leading building standards are starting to consider the use of Cradle to Cradle Certified Products proves that the concept of Cradle to Cradle has become one of the most influential approaches to innovative product design. We hope that this development will further encourage companies to pursue Cradle to Cradle product certification.”
